Posters from Tehran (Plakate aus Teheran)
An Exhibition & Workshop of Majid Abbasi at the
Basel School of Design
April 30 - May 10, 2007
During the first week of May 2007, the Basel School of Design will
be host to Majid Abbassi for the exhibition of his posters and a two
day workshop.
Ralph Schraivogel wrote: “To call Majid Abbasi a poster designer
would not do him justice, he is much more: as co-founder and
co-proprietor of Did Graphics Inc. he is at home in all graphic
design disciplines and produces masterly work with his colleagues in
every field. He is also a networker: as a founder member of the
graphic designers' group known as "The 5th Color" he makes a key
contribution to the subject matter and increasingly dynamic quality
of graphic design in Iran, especially in his own generation. And as
co-organizer of the "Tehran International Poster Biennial" he leaves
no doubt about his organizational skills.”
Majid Abbasi will be holding an Iranian Typography workshop at the
Basel School of Design May 5–6. The theme of the workshop is based
on the name of each student. A name is a label for a human, thing,
place, product (as in a brand name) or even idea or concept,
normally used to distinguish one from another. Names can identify a
class or category of things, or a single thing, either uniquely or
within a given context. A personal name identifies a specific unique
and identifiable individual person.
In this workshop students will learn how to write their name in the
Persian language and design typographic compositions by using two of
the very famous Iranian typefaces. The results will be shown as A3
printouts on 6th of May at the Basel School of Design.
During the past years Alan Fletcher (London), Ahn Sang -Soo (Seul),
Helmut Schmidt (Osaka) and Hamish Muir (London) have also held
workshops and delivered speeches at this School.
The Basel School of Design and its students have influenced the
international Graphic Design community since the 1960’s. Under the
direction of Armin Hofmann and Emil Ruder courses for Graphic Design
and Typography were developed. They were outstanding models for a
modernist design education. Wolfgang Weingart was a professor of
typography at this School until the year 2004.
Since the year 2000, the Swiss educational system has undergone an
astonishingly rapid process of adapting its educational institutions
to the international standards of the Bachelor and Master curricula
at the University level. In this process the Visual Communication
department became a separate institute from the vocational level
School of Design (Schule für Gestaltung Basel). We are now part of
the University system of Northwest Switzerland and have developed a
curriculum for the University level with international
accreditation.
