Nastaligh, Persian Calligraphy
York University in Toronto

Saed Meshki will be presenting a lecture and workshop titled:
Nastaligh, Persian Calligraphy. The event will be held in York
University in Toronto, Canada, on January 5th 2007. Saed will
explain calligraphy and its relationship to culture and cultural
constructs and then will explore history of calligraphy from ancient
Iran to the 15th century, introducing Taligh, Nastalih and Shekaste
Nastaligh.
Nastaligh will be introduced in more detail as a practice that best
showcases the qualities of Persian art and culture. Saed will
illustrate this by showing similarities of Nastaligh with other
Persian art disciplines. Calligraphic formats such as Chalipa and
Siah Mashgh will be discussed as climaxes of beauty and harmony in
Persian calligraphy.
The lecture will be followed by a workshop for York students.
