50 Years of Calligraphy and Typography in Iranian Graphic Design
1 May – 10 May 2007 (Opening: 30 April, 17.00)
Considering the rising interest in Iranian graphic design and
Iranian typography, the Basel School of Design will be presenting a
series of exhibitions, lectures and workshops from 30th April to
10th May 2007.
Prof. Michael Renner, head of the Visual Communication Institute,
The Basel School of Design wrote in an introduction of exhibition
catalogue: “We do not have to work hard to find links between the
typographic arts of Iran and Switzerland. For example, the
typographic work currently being produced in both cultures draws on
a rich script- oriented tradition. It is the task of the present
generation of designers to reinterpret those traditions in modern
form. Of course, neither in Iran nor in Switzerland are they
isolated from international influences. Every design reflects a
relationship with its respective tradition as well as with current
international developments. Parallels can be discerned in the
engagement of Iranian and Swiss designers with digital technology
and its influence on visual communication.

The “Iranian Typography, 50 Years of Calligraphy and Typography in
Iranian Graphic Design” exhibition is a platform on which to debate
the characteristics that are peculiar to the Iranian and Swiss
visual cultures. We hope that it will not hasten the “harmonization”
of the two cultures, but will strengthen each in its singularity.”
The “Iranian Typography” exhibition is a platform for discussion and
debate on the particular characteristics of Iranian and Swiss visual
cultures.
