Fifty-Five Contemporary Artists Revisit Old Masters
Exhibition and book curator: Sebastien Agneessens
Remastered book Published by Die Gestalten Verlag, Berlin, 2006
A new generation of artists and designers defining today’s visual
deconstruct iconic masterpieces by pre-eminent masters from the
Middle Ages and the Renaissance through to the 20th century and
re-contextualize them to contemporary culture. “We have been so
extensively exposed to these images that we automatically assign
them the mythical status of masterpieces, but rarely look to
understand what makes them so unique” says Curator Sebastien
Agneessens.
Agneesens has commissioned fifty-five international visual artists
to “remaster” celebrated works from “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso and
“Gabrielle d’Estree and her Sister” by Ecole de Fontainbleau to “The
Kiss” by Gustav Klimt. The transformations by renowned contemporary
artists and designers include Kenzo Minami, Vincent Skeltis, Mika
Machida, Antoine et Manuel, Insect and more. The result is a
collection of reinterpretations infused with energy, expressive
imagery, insightful wit and socio-political commentary in a wide
variety of styles.
Bijan Sayfouri was invited to remaster The Escape Ladder by Joan
Miro (1939).
Agneesens indicates in the book:
I chose this painting as much for the brilliance of its title as for
its unique beauty. With the commission given to an Iranian artist,
The Escape Ladder by Joan Miro becomes an allegory in this period of
international tensions. But the motivation behind this choice came
from the calligraphic style of Bijan Sayfouri, adding an unexpected
dialogue to the colorful shapes used by the Catalan artist in his
work.
Bijan Sayfouri comments about his poster in the book:
The Escape Ladder by Miro reminds me of the poetic words and
atmosphere of Rumi, the old Persian poet. One can also find The
Escape Ladder in Rumi’s poetry. My remastered version is an Iranian
take on this dreamlike masterpiece. My connection was made through
the use of Persian calligraphy, which you can often find in my work.
My Escape Ladder is an image for IMAGINATION , which is the path of
human connection.
